What To Know About Silent Night

John Woo is a legendary filmmaker and one of the most acclaimed action directors of all time who pioneered the heroic bloodshed and gun fu genres in Hong Kong. He eventually transitioned to Hollywood action films like Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible 2. Today, Woo is widely known for stylistic flourishes like "bullet ballet" action sequences, his frequent use of slow motion, and references to wuxia – some of which are seen in the Silent Night trailer.

Woo hasn't made an American movie since 2003's Paycheck, so it remains to be seen if Silent Night can recapture his legendary status. The Silent Night trailer seems to suggest that Woo will, with quotes from critics saying "Woo has done it again," hailing him as "the master of action," and claiming the movie "will leave you speechless." Narratively, Silent Night seems to be fairly standard stuff, as a father seeks revenge for the death of his son, but what makes the movie unique is its lack of dialogue, continuing a recent trend after Hulu's No One Will Save You.

With the John Wick producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee also on board, Silent Night should at least be able to deliver some similarly exhilarating action and an exploration of a shadowy underworld, if nothing else. Whether actions truly speak louder than words will be revealed when Silent Night appropriately releases this Christmas season starting on December 1.
