The cat's out of the bag in a bizarre Argylle trailer teaser. From the mind of Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kingsman and Kick-Ass, the upcoming spy thriller is based on an unreleased book of the same title by first-time author Elly Conway, whose actual existence has been questioned. The star-studded Argylle cast includes Henry Cavill as the titular spy alongside Sam Rockwell and Bryce Dallas Howard, among many big names.

Now, ahead of the Argylle release date next year, Universal unveiled the first official teaser trailer for the spy movie, and it's a doozy. Check it out below:

The cryptic teaser doesn't feature Cavill and instead begins with an image of a cat in an argyle pattern backpack in front of a smoking gun, a pen, and pink lipstick while mysterious voiceover says, "Once you discover the secret, don't let the cat out of the bag." The teaser then cuts to Sam Rockwell taking the cat out of Bryce Dallas Howard's backpack and dropping it off a rooftop. However, if the old adage is true, it should land safely on its feet.

Everything We Know About Argylle

Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill embracing in Argylle Movie

Argylle has been shrouded in secrecy since it was first announced in June 2021, although the movie's star-studded cast, as highlighted by the teaser trailer, has made a big splash. Other than the aforementioned names, the Argylle cast includes Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, John Cena, Rob Delaney, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie also marks the next acting role for pop star Dua Lipa, who will also provide original music for the title track and score.

Director Matthew Vaughn has described Argylle as an ode to 1980s action thrillers like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. Vaughn cast Cavill as the titular spy because he believes the actor "was born to play Bond," and he wanted to cast him before the actual 007 franchise could. Vaughn describes Cavill's titular spy as a "larger-than-life action hero with a wink," though the film is very different from the Kingsman franchise. Similarly, Argylle is intended to serve as the start of a franchise consisting of at least a trilogy.

Though the Argylle trailer teaser doesn't reveal much about the movie, its plot is similarly bizarre. It follows Howard's Elly Conway, a bestselling author whose spy novels start to look very similar to a real-life spy organization's actual operations. Naturally, things evolve from there and Elly must join forces with Rockwell's spy on a globe-trotting adventure. The bizarre teaser suggests the film will feature an offbeat tone, though much more will be revealed when the full-length Argylle trailer premieres tomorrow.
