The status of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 got an encouraging update from executive producer Alex Kurtzman at New York Comic Con 2023. Kurtzman oversees all of Star Trek on Paramount+, and production of upcoming TV series and movies was halted by the combined WGA writer's strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike. Now that the writer's strike is resolved, Kurtzman addressed the fans in attendance at NYCC's Star Trek Universe panel about where things stand with the wildly popular Strange New Worlds.

As transcribed by TrekMovie, Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman talked about the overall state of the Paramount+ franchise at the Star Trek Universe NYCC panel. Kurtzman told the fans that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is "definitely" still happening. Read his quote below:

“Season 3 was just about the start before the strike. So we’re we are now back on our feet and everything’s kind of getting resettled. Schedules are shifting around, but it’s definitely in the works, and we cannot wait.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Picks Up On A Massive Cliffhanger

As Alex Kurtzman noted at NYCC, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was supposed to start filming right when the writer's strike happened in May. No writing or production could take place during the strikes, and no filming can happen as long as SAG-AFTRA is still picketing for a fair deal from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). However, the writers are coming back to work as things get "resettled" and Kurtzman affirmed that "schedules are shifting around," which likely means Strange New Worlds season 3 is preparing to start production sometime in 2024 as long as the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved.

Strange New Worlds season 3 has to pick up on a massive cliffhanger. Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) caught in a no-win scenario as members of the USS Enterprise crew have been kidnapped by the Gorn while Starfleet ordered Pike not to engage the enemy aliens. Making matters worse, Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) may not survive being infected by Gorn eggs gestating inside her. Given how long production on the series takes once filming finally begins, fans may have to wait until 2025 to see Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, but it can't come soon enough.
