Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown reflects on the harsh criticism she received from adults at the begining of the show. Now 19 years old, Brown was 12 when she was first cast as the quiet but stunning Eleven in the Netflix breakout hit Stranger Things. Her role as Eleven has largely gained the actress praise, earning her two Emmy nominations. The show itself has continued on to great success, and Stranger Things season 5 will arrive next year.

Recalling the times when not all comments were positive, Brown expresses her feelings towards criticism she got from adults while making Stranger Things. Speaking with Glamour Magazine, Brown recounted that she was “penalised for overtalking and oversharing and being too loud.” Adults called Brown “an idiot” and a “brat,” which discouraged the young actress from speaking as much in interviews. Check out the full quote from Brown below:

We’re kids—we talk over each other. I was just penalised for overtalking and oversharing and being too loud [and] trying to steal the thunder [of castmates].

It’s hard to hear that at 13. You’re like, ‘I don't want to ever talk again. I don’t want to be the loud person.’ In interviews I couldn’t help but think of all the comments. So I just remembered to stay silent and speak when I was spoken to, even though I was dying to join in. I just felt it wasn’t my turn.

Millie Bobby Brown’s Youth Is Notable In Her Career

Despite the criticism of Brown, she had a number of remarkable achievements for a young actress. Nominated for her first Stranger Things Emmy at 13 years old, Brown became one of the youngest people ever for the award nomination. While she did not win the coveted statuette, being nominated at such a young age is a notable feat.

At 19, her Hollywood resume now includes a litany of accomplishments that are impressive for her age. At just 16 years old, Brown starred in and acted as a producer for Enola Holmes, where he plays Sherlock Holmes’ titular sister. Producing in teenage years is virtually unheard of in major Hollywood productions, thus adding another aspect to Brown’s career that is impressive by virtue of her age.

Looking at her career in this light makes the early Stranger Things detractors even more ridiculous. While it is out of line to ever chastise a 13-year-old so harshly, those early naysayers did not even know yet the kind of powerhouse they were up against with Brown. The Stranger Things actress has luckily overcome this early criticism and is now one of the most celebrated and accomplished talents of her generation.
