Hench and Scrap, well-known convention personalities, recently created an owlbear cub puppet that perfectly captures the look of the creature featured in Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate 3 for PAX Australia 2023. In addition to being a striking resemblance to an owlbear, the puppet is able to close its eyes, shake its head, and move its arms, creating an even more lifelike resemblance to the cute critter. The beautiful creation caught the eye of Larian, who shared the impressive clip saying: "We desperately want to pet *this* owlbear."
Though ultimately, the owlbear cub is just a puppet re-creation of the one featured in the game, it stands as one of the most realistic real-life depictions of the creature out there. In addition, the accuracy of the Halsin costume for the performer is also top-notch, as the performance perfectly depicts the burly druid, as close attention to detail was obviously taken to fabricate his memorable armor.
Hench And Scrap Are Professional Cosplayers
According to the Hench and Scrap website, the duo are a couple who met in Overwatch cosplay at PAX 2016 and have since created a workshop and studio fabricating props and cosplay costumes for popular games like Magic The Gathering, Warcraft, and Baldur's Gate 3. In addition to designing and creating cosplay costumes, Hench and Scrap creates replica props and influencer kits for games like The Elder Scrolls Online and regularly attends comic and gaming conventions like PAX. They also design custom event trophies and can create small-to-large replicas of essentially anything.
In D&D and BG3, owlbears can be pretty ferocious beasts that, as their name would imply, have a bear's body and an owl's face. While their origins in the Forgotten Realms are up for debate, they are also known as fearsome predators that are quite hard to defeat in their adult form. However, as a cub, owlbears are actually really cute, with huge eyes and a kind disposition, a stark contrast from their adult counterparts.
In Baldur's Gate 3, it's possible to fight an owlbear fairly early in Act 1 and tame and own an owlbear cub via the goblin camp found early in the game. As one of the few recruitable "pets" in BG3, attaining the owlbear early on in the game is actually a big goal for many.
