Summary

  • Final Fantasy 16 will receive two paid DLC expansions, driven by fan demand for more of Valisthea's story.
  • More information on the DLCs and the PC version will be revealed before the end of 2023.
  • The free update for FF16 adds a weapon skin feature and a free outfit option for certain characters, and it is already available.

There are new pieces of information about DLC expansions for Final Fantasy 16, as well as updates on the PC version of FF16. The new action RPG from Square Enix was received to critical acclaim when it was released earlier this year, as it brings a fresh experience to the franchise, both in terms of story and gameplay. It seems, however, that its content will be significantly expanded in the future.

According to a special message recorded by producer Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, on the official Final Fantasy 16 page on Twitter, the game will receive two paid DLC expansions. The developer mentions that what drove the team to work on the content was the fan opinion of players who wanted to “see more of Valisthea’s story.” Another great piece of information released with the same video is that the development for the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 has officially started.

Yoshi-P cites that more information on both the PC version and the DLCs should be revealed before the end of 2023. The developer also announced a free update for FF16, which adds a weapon skin feature, allowing players to change the appearance of Clive’s weapons. The second part of the free update also gifts a free outfit option for Clive, Jill, Torgal, Ambrosia, and Joshua. The update is already available.

Possible Final Fantasy 16 DLC Content & PC Version Release Date

It is uncertain exactly what will be shown in the DLCs for Final Fantasy 16, especially considering how well-rounded the main campaign is. That is not to say, however, that there are no open ends and other aspects of lore that can be explored. In fact, there is a major story plot that definitely deserves more attention: the way slaves are shown in Final Fantasy 16 is somewhat superfluous and is one of the main sources of criticism toward the game’s story – this could possibly change with the release of one of the DLCs.

There is also a large locked door in The Dim, which can serve as an entrance to an entirely new area for the game once at least one of the expansions for Final Fantasy 16 is released. It is hard to predict exactly when the DLCs will be released, but they must have been in Square Enix’s plans far before the reaction from players. If the game’s expansions are not coming out this year, more details about them and their content should be revealed during major gaming showcases, like a dedicated Square Enix broadcast or perhaps even during The Game Awards 2023.

The same can be said about the PC version of Final Fantasy 16. The game was originally released as a six-month timed exclusive for PS5 consoles, meaning it cannot arrive for PC before December 22. Considering the PC port has only seen its development start now, according to Yoshi-P, it may take a while longer before the RPG arrives for a new platform. While players will have to wait before getting new information about DLCs and the PC version, the future of Final Fantasy 16 does look promising.
