Universal's Halloween Horror Nights creative director, John Murdy, reveals that Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker reprised their roles as Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us to record new dialogue for the haunted house. Johnson and Baker have been a major part of this franchise since the start, even appearing in the Max adaptation as different characters. Their voices are intrinsically tied to Ellie and Joel having established them and making fans fall in love with these characters for ten years.

At a press event, which Screen Rant attended, for Halloween Horror Nights, Murdy discusses incorporating Joel and Ellie into the encounter. He explains that they'll be featured as live performers in the house. Murdy also discusses working with Johnson and Baker to record custom dialogue for the Halloween Horror Nights haunted house. Check out Murdy's full quote below:

John Murdy: It was also really important to establish the protagonists of the game, which is Joel and Ellie. So Joel and Ellie are featured as live performers. And also Troy and Ashley, who did the voices for the video game; I directed them, and they did custom dialogue and voiceover for us specifically for the house. So our performers will be lip-syncing to track.

The Halloween Horror Nights house for The Last of Us is focused not on the HBO series but on the video game, which is clearer than ever with who returned to record the dialogue. Fans will get to interact with Joel and Ellie in this house as they step into the iconic Pittsburgh quarantine zone with The Last of Us protagonists. This new dialogue could be focused on helping fans make their way through the haunted house, but it could also tap into some of the most fun parts of the games, like Ellie's need to crack jokes from her infamous joke book, much to Joel's chagrin.

With Johnson and Baker reprising their roles for new dialogue, Halloween Horror Nights brings new layers to the experience. Visitors won't just have clickers to contend with; they'll be able to see the protagonists from the game in person as they lead them into the scare-infested haunt. Baker and Johnson have been the heart of The Last of Us since the beginning, and Halloween Horror Nights is the perfect opportunity to celebrate them and the game they were a part of during the ten-year anniversary of when it first debuted in 2013.
