The latest release from Kindt's creator-owned imprint Flux House is an offbeat detective story that will have mystery fans eager to check out the bizarre case Kindt and Torres have in store.

Fans of Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT, BRZRKR) may be familiar with the creator-owned imprint he launched under Dark Horse Comics, Flux House. The imprint was inspired by Fluxus, an avant-garde movement that evolved out of Surrealism and Dadaism. Fluxus works were absurd, experimental, and often humorous.

In a preview for Subgenre #1 by Kindt and Torres, Detective Verge narrates his troubles as a private investigator. He subdues his landlord, promising he'll have all the money he needs to make rent by the time he gets back. Verge takes on a new case for Decipher Cosmics, the largest media company in the world. Unfortunately, they've got a sketchy crime scene filled with blood and are only hiring Verge to solve the case and keep the news from getting out. Verge does some digging into an affluent man named Ronnie Lake and, with the help of Verge's AI assistant, he finds Lake and heads to interrogate him.

The preview raises a lot of questions about what's going on. Who is Ronnie Lake and how is he connected to what's happened at Decipher Cosmics? There's also a question of what exactly happened at the conglomerate, and why the company is doing its best to keep the incident hush-hush. The mystery presented in this preview also makes one wonder how it connects to the premise described in the series' solicited information, which claims Verge is experiencing a second life as a barbarian in his dreams. Though a lot of mysteries hang in the air, it's an intriguing peek at the experimental storytelling people should expect from Subgenre.
