Recently, Perry White suffered a minor stroke thanks to Lex Luthor, who used the psychic powers of Manchester Black to make everyone on Earth forget Superman's exposed secret identity. Thankfully Lex's plan didn't kill Perry, but it did cause him to step down from his role as The Daily Planet's Editor-in-Chief, leaving Lois Lane to run the paper and allow White to move on to better things.

In a preview for Superman #7 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov, Dan Jurgens, Norm Rapmund, and Edwin Galmon, Perry recounts the first time he met the Man of Tomorrow, stunned at the revelation a man really could fly. Superman's former employer mentions how the hero inspires the citizens of Metropolis to be the best versions of themselves. And now that he's recovered from his medical issue, Perry's prepared to be his best self by announcing his candidacy for mayor of Metropolis. Unfortunately, White's banner day is ruined by Superman's new foe, the Chained, who approaches Perry, demanding to know the location of Lex Luthor.

Though Lois Lane has taken the reins of The Daily Planet, she's been hoping that Perry would eventually come back after his medical leave and relieve her of the pressures she's facing as Editor-in-Chief. But White's been gearing up for this run at least since Superman 2023 Annual #1 and he seems like he's in it to win it. It should be noted that there have been other continuities where Perry was Metropolis' mayor, so this move isn't out of character for him. But with so much change occurring in Metropolis, it's going to need a person of integrity leading the city and Perry White is the person for the job.
