Summary

  • Star Wars' mysterious Dawn of the Jedi movie has been in development for quite some time, with David S. Goyer having written a script for it.
  • Lucasfilm has secretly been working on the Jedi origin movie for years, as suggested by Goyer's comments about his involvement in the project.
  • The idea of a Jedi origins movie aligns with the direction Star Wars took after the sequel trilogy, as hinted in The Last Jedi's portrayal of the Prime Jedi.

Star Wars mysterious Dawn of the Jedi movie has been in the works for a lot longer than anyone thought, with David S. Goyer writing a script. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy announced three upcoming Star Wars movies - one of which, set during the "Dawn of the Jedi" era, would be helmed by James Mangold. This was the first audiences had heard of this project, but it seems it's been in the works for quite a while.

Speaking in an interview with Josh Horowitz, Foundation showrunner David S. Goyer revealed he'd worked on a script for a Jedi origin movie. After speaking of an unmade Guillermo del Toro project, he noted that he "wrote an unproduced scriptment for an origins of the Jedi movie, also for Star Wars, that I wrote for them... that took place 25,000 years before the first Star Wars film."

It's important to note Goyer doesn't suggest his Jedi origins movie is still in the works; in fact, he seems rather more comfortable talking about that than the Guillermo del Toro film. The implication, then, is that Lucasfilm has been toying with this particular idea for quite some time.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Set Up A Jedi Origins Movie

Luke Skywalker and the Prime Jedi mural in The Last Jedi.

In truth, this was always a logical direction for Star Wars to head after the sequel trilogy. Star Wars: The Last Jedi revealed what Luke Skywalker believed to be the first Jedi Temple at Ahch-To, with a mural of the Prime Jedi - the being who founded the order. Curiously, it strongly hinted the Prime Jedi had a very different philosophy to the one expounded by Jedi in the Skywalker saga. The mural depicted the Prime Jedi as an agent of balance; the darkness in the light, and the light in the darkness.

The timing, however, is very interesting. According to Goyer, the del Toro script was written roughly four years ago; it was presumably abandoned because of major changes in Lucasfilm after the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the divisive conclusion of the sequel trilogy. His words imply a chronology, however, meaning he worked on the Jedi origin movie after this point. If that's the case, Lucasfilm has been planning to show the Dawn of the Jedi for years.
