Darth Vader may have been as Star Wars’ greatest villain, but one fan art perfectly captures his tragic metamorphosis from the once-heroic Anakin Skywalker. Darth Vader seemed at first to be more monster or machine than man, but when he is revealed to be Luke Skywalker’s father, the movies begin to focus on the complexity of his character. The subsequent prequel trilogy reveals that Anakin was the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. Instead, his fall to the dark side made way for a new age of Sith control over the galaxy.

Artist Clement Maisor took to Instagram to share an incredible artwork that brings Anakin out from behind Vader’s mask.

Starting with a sketch of the iconic helmet, Maisor then splattered coffee onto the page. No, this wasn’t an accident; after drying the paper and outlining the spillage, the stained portion was soon covered with a portrait of Anakin Skywalker. The two sides of his face, one masked and the other still human, match up perfectly as a reminder that the two characters are still the same man.

Anakin Did Bring Balance - Just Not In The Way The Jedi Expected

Anakin's Skywalker's Force Ghost in Return of the Jedi and Ahsoka episode 8.

When Qui-Gon Jinn found the young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and brought him before the Council, the Jedi were introduced to the idea that he could be the focus of a prophecy that spoke of a Chosen One who would destroy the evil Sith and balance the Force. As Anakin grows and becomes more unpredictable, Mace Windu and Yoda point out that the Jedi prophecy could have been misread. They were right; Anakin was their Chosen One, but he didn’t bring balance in the way they were expecting.

As George Lucas has been clear that even despite Anakin’s fall, he remains the Chosen One during his time as Darth Vader. His connection to the Force set him up to be more than just a powerful Jedi, and his experience with both the light and dark sides make Anakin the perfect conduit to bring true balance. Star Wars has long been a story of redemption and courage, and when Luke is ultimately able to break through to his father, Anakin proves that it’s never too late to be who you were always meant to be.
