Summary

Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Norse God of Thunder, is sent to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) as punishment for disobeying his orders. As a mortal he must prove himself to be worthy of reclaiming his position but first he must be able to take control of his hammer, Mjolnir. The first instalment of Thor was released on May 6, 2011 as part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase 1 plans. The film was helmed by Kenneth Branagh. The story serves as a backstory as well for Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s adoptive brother who will go on to figure in more MCU movies such as The Avengers. The discovery of Loki’s real identity as the son of Laufey (Colm Feore), king of Jotunheim is also featured in this movie. Thor and Loki grew up as loving brothers but it turns out Loki is envious when Thor was chosen as heir to Odin’s throne. He possesses a more serious personality in contrast to Thor’s happy-go-lucky attitude. Also featured in the movie is Thor’s best friend Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and the Warriors Three, composed of Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) and Fandral (Josh Dallas). Heimdall (Idiris Elba), the gatekeeper of the Bifrost Bridge is also seen in the movie as well as Odin’s wife Frigga (Rene Russo). On Earth, Thor meets Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and his love interest Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). They cross paths with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) from S.H.I.E.L.D. in a subplot that would later serve as a bridge to the story in another MCU movie, The Avengers. Thor is a Marvel comic character based on Norse mythology, who was introduced during the Silver Age of Comic Books. Character creator Stan Lee worked with scripter Larry Lieber and pencil-plotter Jack Kirby in the comic series called The Mighty Thor and Journey Into Mystery. Thor has two sequels, Thor: The Dark World released in October 2013 and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok scheduled for release in October 2017.
