Summary

  • The upcoming Agatha Harkness spinoff series from WandaVision has gone through multiple title changes, including Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and now Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
  • The constant title changes can contribute to superhero fatigue and make it difficult for audiences to keep track of upcoming releases in the MCU.
  • Marvel has not provided clear reasons for the title changes, but speculation suggests that they may be trying to avoid negative connotations or create a sense of chaos and unpredictability in the series. However, constant changes can harm the marketing of the show.

The MCU Phase 5 has seen streaming series like Agatha: Darkhold Diaries being churned out as swiftly as their big-screen counterparts, which has given rise to a statistic that makes a post-Endgame complaint even more valid. Two more series are set to release in 2023 alone, while The Marvels hits theaters in November. It means there is plenty of MCU content to enjoy over the coming months, but the sheer volume can feel a little overwhelming - something that has been exacerbated by yet another change to the Agatha spinoff series.

The new Agatha Harkness MCU streaming show is the anticipated spinoff to WandaVision, focussing on the clandestine villain and the nature of witches and sorcery in the MCU. With it being more than a year out from release, details are still relatively scarce, other than Kathryn Hahn and several other WandaVision actors will be reprising their roles. One thing that is seemingly more difficult to nail down, however, is the title of the show.

The Agatha Harkness MCU Streaming Show Is On Its Third Official Name

When it was first announced in November 2021, Agatha Harkness' solo series was titled Agatha: House of Harkness. This then changed to Agatha: Coven of Chaos in July 2022, which has now officially changed once more to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. While these titles are official, they aren't even the only ones that have apparently been in use, with set photos from the show revealing that the show has also been referred to as Agnes of Westview. While the official name of the series is Darkhold Diaries for now, this could foreshadow yet another change between now and November 2024.

Given that Aubrey Plaza shared an image via social media teasing this new title back in May, it seems apparent that this name change has been in the works for a while. What is also apparent is that Darkhold Diaries and Agnes of Westview are both homages to The Princess Diaries and Mare of Easttown, respectively, though the significance of this remains to be seen. What is known is that the series will pick up where WandaVision's ending left off, meaning the TV show references could be influenced by its predecessor.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries marks a rare new trend in the MCU with its numerous title changes. While MCU title changes are far from commonplace, it has become something of a Phase 5-specific statistic, as Captain America: Brave New World also underwent a name change post-announcement. This could be bad news for Marvel if the studio decides to make a habit of such changeability in the future.

Why So Many MCU Name Changes Can Make Superhero Fatigue Seem Worse

MCU's Scarlet Witch in WandaVision

The MCU has been pumping out releases since 2008 and has significantly increased its output since then. Averaging three movie releases a year, up from the initial two, MCU releases were majorly increased as the franchise was bolstered by streaming series, which Disney Plus facilitated. This has given rise to a cinematic phenomenon known as "superhero fatigue," which describes the complaint that the MCU, and the Superhero genre as a whole, can be difficult to keep abreast of with so many releases being churned out each year.

Changing the title of projects after their initial announcement exacerbates this problem, as it can make it seem as though new titles are entirely different releases to the casual observer. It also makes the production of anticipated upcoming releases look less organized, which could damage the marketing of some of the MCU's flagship titles. It also doesn't help that the reasoning behind the name changes isn't clear.

Why Agatha's Show And Captain America 4 Changed Titles

Marvel has been noticeably quiet when it comes to explaining why titles were changed for Captain America 4 and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries during production. With no official reasons behind the switch-ups, there is only speculation. The original title for Captain America 4 was New World Order, so it is reasonable to assume that the title change was an effort to dodge negative connotations with controversial conspiracy theories. The three official Agatha Harkness title changes, however, seem more arbitrary.

There is a possibility that the constant title changes are part of the plan when it comes to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. "Chaos", after all, is inherent in the magic wielded by Wanda and perhaps more witches that could be central to the plot of the spinoff series, and its predecessor WandaVision was rife with meta moments. But this doesn't seem likely given that the new series is now in post-production, and can seemingly only be harmed by constant name-changes when it comes to the marketing.
