Summary

  • The Flash will be recast for the new DC Universe, with Ezra Miller's departure suggesting a fresh start for the franchise.
  • Several actors, such as Garrett Hedlund, Daniel Sharman, and Sam Heughan, could excel as the DCU's version of The Flash.
  • Other potential actors considered for the role include Jack Quaid, Logan Lerman, Hayden Christensen, George MacKay, Kyle Allen, Dylan O'Brien, and Lucas Till.

The Flash will reportedly be recast for the new DC Universe, and with Ezra Miller out, some actors would be perfect to take over as the speedster. Miller debuted as Barry Allen as a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, then had a major role in 2017's Justice League before getting to lead The Flash's cast in the hero's first solo movie. However, despite receiving praise from several celebrities before its premiere, The Flash ended up becoming a historic box office disappointment, which seemed to spell doom for Miller's chances of returning as Barry in James Gunn's new DC Universe.

Now, a new report claims the entire Justice League cast is out of Gunn's DC Universe. While DC has yet to confirm that, the choice seems like the natural path for the DCU to start fresh. With Miller seemingly out of the role and Gunn having confirmed in the past that Arrowverse Flash Grant Gustin will not return as the speedster in the new DC Universe, the hero's role in the DCU is up for the taking. There are some actors that could excel as the DCU's version of The Flash, which could be either Barry Allen or Wally West — the latter helping to make things different from the DCEU.

10 Garrett Hedlund

Garrett Hedlund

Hedlund has experience with a franchise that features more outlandish elements like The Flash. Hedlund played Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy, which showed the actor's ability to be the face of an action-heavy franchise. Playing the DCU's Flash would allow Hedlund to finally have a long-running franchise role, as Tron failed to do that despite the actor being excellent in it. Hedlund's recent turn in Tulsa King shows he has the dramatic chops to pull off a major superhero role. As Gunn wants the DCU to feel lived-in, both Barry Allen and Wally West could exist, with Hedlund, at 39, being perfect for a mentor Barry.

9 Daniel Sharman

Daniel Sharman in Fear the Walking Dead

Daniel Sharman is one of the rare actors that could excel at playing Barry Allen or his biggest rival, Reverse-Flash. Sharman's charming performance as Isaac Lahey in Teen Wolf makes him a great pick to play a compassionate Barry in the DCU, and the fact that many Teen Wolf stars were part of the Arrowverse bodes well for his DC chances. Sharman's role as Troy Otto in Fear the Walking Dead serves to show his incredible range, with the actor transitioning from laid-back to deranged at the flip of a coin. A strong actor like Sharman only needs a major movie role like The Flash to become a star.

8 Sam Heughan

Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in Outlander season 7 episode 8

Another actor who could play Barry Allen as a mentor is Sam Heughan. The actor became known for giving life to Jamie Fraser in the period series Outlander. With the successful series having been renewed for an eighth and final season, Heughan will be free to take on a role as demanding as Barry Allen. Jamie Fraser is a natural leader who will put himself in harm's way to protect his family and friends without thinking, which makes Heughan a perfect fit for The Flash. The actor also has some experience in superhero movies that could help him transition into the DCU, having appeared opposite Vin Diesel in Bloodshot.

7 Jack Quaid

Hughie Campbell takes cover in The Boys.

Jack Quaid has the superhero experience to play The Flash in the upcoming DCU movies thanks to his role as Hughie Campbell in the hit superhero satire series The Boys. Hughie, much like modern Barry Allen, is intelligent, charming, dorky, vibrant, and shy. If Quaid replicates what works for Hughie for the DCU's Barry while also adding even more depth and physicality to the role than he has shown in the past, then the actor would be perfect. At 31, Quaid playing Barry would also mean that Wally West would need to either be a teenager — maybe part of the Teen Titans — or not appear in the DCU at first.

6 Logan Lerman

Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson holds water trident in The Lightning Thief

While Aquaman might be too on the nose, Logan Lerman would be a great pick to serve as a young Barry Allen in Gunn's DC Universe. The actor became famous for playing the lead role of Poseidon's son in two Percy Jackson movies, and Lerman was perfect as the charming, fierce, and loyal Percy, making him a great choice to play Barry. Lerman has also shown his acting range with a role in the war movie Fury and hunting Nazis in Amazon's Hunters series. After Gunn denied Lerman was his top choice for Superman: Legacy, Lerman could join the DCU as The Flash.

5 Hayden Christensen

Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka

Hayden Christensen would fit perfectly as a mentor Barry Allen in the new DC Universe. After years away from his most important role, Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, Christensen returned with exciting appearances in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka. Christensen's Anakin in Ahsoka was the perfect mentor that an older Barry Allen could be to an up-and-coming Wally West in the DCU, with the actor having the necessary charisma and athletic ability to bring The Flash to life. Christensen's casting would also bring in a large fanbase to the DCU.

4 George MacKay

A soldier standing in a trench full of crouching men in 1917.

George MacKay played the lead role of William Schofield in one of the best war movies of all time, Sam Mendes' 1917. The film followed MacKay's character running around during World War I, with the actor hardly having any lines. That setup led to MacKay showing his incredible range, as he could express through facial expressions and body language all the fear and adrenaline his character was experiencing. MacKay was also at the center of a recasting rumor that claimed he was being eyed to replace Miller as The Flash of the DC Universe's younger Justice League, and while the rumor is unconfirmed, it adds to his chances.

3 Kyle Allen

Kyle Allen as Skylar in The In Between

The DC Universe could choose to cast a relatively new name as The Flash, and Kyle Allen would be a great choice. Despite his name, Allen would be a perfect fit for Wally West rather than Barry. The 29-year-old actor has made a name for himself in the last few years with multiple roles in romantic comedies. In The In Between and as the classic character Romeo in the modern Rom-Com Rosaline, Allen showed he has what it takes to bring Wally West's impulsiveness, sarcastic humor, and vibrant personality from the comics to life in the DCU.

2 Dylan O’Brien

Stiles Stilinski in Teen Wolf

A more well-known name to play Wally West in the new DC Universe is Dylan O'Brien. Through The Maze Runner trilogy and American Assassin — in which he starred opposite Batman actor Michael Keaton — O'Brien showed that he has what it takes to captivate a large audience as the lead of an action franchise. O'Brien has the perfect mix of dramatic skills and comedy chops to play Wally, with the actor's breakout role of Stiles Stilinski in Teen Wolf cementing his comedic timing, a necessary trait for whatever actor gets to play Wally West if Gunn chooses to have him be The Flash of the DCU.

1 Lucas Till

Lucas Till plays Tripp in Monster Trucks

Lucas Till is a popular name associated with The Flash fancasting. It is easy to see why, as Till looks exactly like comic book Barry Allen. Till also has superhero experience, having played Havok in the younger continuity of Fox's X-Men franchise that started with X-Men: First Class. Through his lead role in the MacGyver series, Till showed his charisma, comedic timing, dramatic skills, and ability with action sequences. With The Flash fan art featuring Till becoming popular, just like was the case with David Corenswet as Superman, Till might have a chance to become the DCU's new version of The Flash.
