Summary

  • Star Trek Universe panel at NYCC reveals little new information, disappointing fans. Lack of news due to ongoing strikes and no actors appearing at the panel.
  • Kid Cudi teams up with Star Trek for a multi-platform collaboration involving a new song, a Fortnite game, and streetwear. Unveiled at the panel with Alex Kurtzman and Joshua Horowitz.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy moves to Netflix, with all 20 season 1 episodes debuting in 2023, and 20 all-new season 2 episodes dropping in 2024.

Star Trek beamed into New York Comic Con 2023, but the Star Trek Universe panel revealed little that wasn't already known and the lack of substantial news was disappointing if not unexpected. With the Writer's Guild of America strike resolved, Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman and Star Trek: Lower Decks creator/showrunner Mike McMahan joined host Joshua Horowitz for the Star Trek Universe NYCC panel. The 75-minute presentation centered on an advance screening of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 8, "Caves," for the audience in attendance and an appearance by Kid Cudi.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing, it meant no actors could appear at Star Trek's NYCC panel to promote the upcoming series still slated for 2024. The strike is likely one of the determining factors as to why little actual Star Trek TV and movie news was revealed at NYCC. The strike continues to hold production on shows such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 at a standstill, and no actors means Paramount+ can't move forward with its initial plans to give the final season of Star Trek: Discovery full-court publicity. Instead, whatever there is to reveal about Star Trek coming up in 2024 was largely held back with Alex Kurtzman offering only vague but encouraging hints of what Star Trek on Paramount+ will look like in the coming year.

Kid Cudi was the star power at Star Trek's NYCC panel. The rapper teamed with Star Trek to launch a multi-platform collaboration at NYCC. Boldly Be: Star Trek x Kid Cudi involves a new Trek-themed song, "Heaven's Galaxy," a Fortnite Star Trek game starring Kid Cudi called Star Trek: Mirror Madness, and a line of Star Trek x Kid Cudi streetwear. Kid Cudi joined Alex Kurtzman and Joshua Horowitz on stage at the Star Trek Universe panel to espouse his lifelong Star Trek fandom and unveil this behind-the-scenes video of Boldly Be: Star Trek x Kid Cudi, which you can watch below:

8 Star Trek: Lower Decks Is Coming Back For Season 5 & More News

T'Lyn Mariner Tendi

Following the screening of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 8, "Caves," Mike McMahan joined the Star Trek Universe panel. Lower Decks' showrunner had a couple of cool announcements: T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz), Star Trek: Lower Decks' new Vulcan character who quickly became a fan-favorite, will return for Lower Decks season 5, which is in production now. In addition, the Lower Deckers will return to the Orion homeworld, birthplace of Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells), in season 5. McMahan also discussed the Lower Deckers' promotion to Lieutenants happening at the start of season 4 instead of at the end, and talk also turned toward Moopsy.

7 Star Trek: Prodigy Is Saved But No Netflix Release Dates

Star Trek Prodigy season 2 Rok Dal

Alex Kurtzman thanked the fans for saving Star Trek: Prodigy, which is moving to Netflix. Earlier this week, Star Trek: Prodigy's showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman announced the beloved animated series has made Netflix its new streaming home. Kurtzman hailed the dedicated fan effort to save Star Trek: Prodigy, including the airplane fans rented to fly a #SaveStarTrekProdigy banner over Los Angeles. All 20 Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 episodes debut on Netflix later in 2023, and 20 all-new season 2 episodes will drop in 2024. No release date was announced at NYCC, but that's not surprising since the Star Trek Universe panel is a Paramount+ sponsored affair, and Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Prodigy in June 2023.

6 Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Is Still Coming In 2024

Captain Burnham Discovery Season 5

Alex Kurtzman confirmed what was previously reported: Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is coming to Paramount+ in 2024. Kurtzman also verified that Discovery season 5, which is the final season, is completed, the finale will be an "incredibly satisfying" ending to the series that kicked off Star Trek on Paramount+, and star and producer "Sonequa Martin-Green gave the performance of her life." Yet no concrete release date was announced, and there was no reveal of the Star Trek: Discovery season 5 trailer. There wasn't even a poster or any key art released to tease the final season of Star Trek: Discovery. Perhaps Paramount+ is waiting for the SAG-AFTRA strike to be resolved before Star Trek: Discovery season 5 promotion finally begins in earnest, but as 2023 nears its end, the same questions about the final season of Discovery that have lingered all year remain unanswered.

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Writers' Room Reopened

Discovery Starfleet Academy

With the writer's strike resolved, Alex Kurtzman revealed that the writer's room for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reopened last week. This includes Star Trek: Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome, who is a writer for Starfleet Academy and who Kurtzman called "a genius." Kurtzman spoke about the concept for Starfleet Academy and that the show will be "really fun. It’s really funny. And it’s ultimately a show that speaks to the generation now." Kurtzman also said filming for Starfleet Academy will begin sometime in 2024. Starfleet Academy was announced last March, but there was no news about any actors or characters, or teaser art. Nor has Star Trek on Paramount+ even confirmed what era the YA-centric Starfleet Academy takes place in (although odds are Starfleet Academy is a spinoff that continues Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd-century timeline).

4 Star Trek: Section 31 Movie Is Moving Forward

Emperor Georgiou and Section 31 in Star Trek Discovery

Star Trek's NYCC panel offered no new updates on Star Trek: Section 31, the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie on Paramount+. Section 31 was reportedly meant to begin filming in fall 2023 before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes happened. Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh will headline Section 31, and Alex Kurtzman touted how Yeoh used her clout to keep the movie "moving forward." However, like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, there have been no other announcements as to other characters besides Yeoh's Emperor Philippa Georgiou, other actors involved, or even confirmation of what era of Star Trek Section 31 is set in. Encouragingly, Kurtzman did say there are "a bunch of new things" brewing for Star Trek beyond the Section 31 movie, and he cited the incredible support from the leadership team at Paramount+.

3 Nothing New Announced About Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

Strange New Worlds Gorn Kidnapped

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was all set to start filming season 3 in May when the writer's strike happened. At Star Trek's NYCC panel, Alex Kurtzman said Strange New Worlds season 3, which will pick up on a massive cliffhanger, is "definitely still in the works" and "schedules are shifting around." Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman did make a surprise appearance at the panel to talk with Alex Kurtzman and Mike McMahan about Strange New Worlds season 2's well-loved crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, but odds are fans won't see Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the Starship Enterprise again until 2025.

2 Nothing Announced About Star Trek: Legacy

The starship Enterprise is docked in space, Captain Seven of Nine stands looking to the left

Perhaps the most frustrating thing for audiences who loved Star Trek: Picard season 3 is Star Trek's NYCC panel had no news to share about Picard's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy. Despite a dedicated fan campaign advocating for Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas to get his continuation show about Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and the USS Enterprise-G, there is no apparent movement toward Star Trek: Legacy actually happening. This remains genuinely baffling considering Star Trek: Picard season 3 was one of Star Trek on Paramount+'s most acclaimed and successful shows.

1 No Star Trek 4 Movie News

Chris Pine as Kirk, with Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek Bridge Crew artwork

There was no mention of the next J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie at NYCC's Star Trek Universe panel, but this was expected since Star Trek movies are the purview of Paramount Pictures and the panel was about Paramount+'s Star Trek TV series overseen by Alex Kurtzman. Despite a recent report that Star Trek 4 is "still on the tracks" and is a priority for Paramount, there remains no new director attached and questions remain about whether it will be a reboot or if the Star Trek movie cast led by Chris Pine will return to the Starship Enterprise.
