Summary

  • Geordi La Forge is Star Trek's most important Commodore as he oversees the most legendary starships in the Athan Prime Fleet Museum.
  • Geordi commanded the USS Enterprise-D in its final battle against the Borg, proving he is a capable leader of a legendary fleet.
  • The museum's starships are not just historic artifacts but are also in-reserve, ready to face new threats that the Federation may encounter in the future.

Star Trek: Picard's Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is the most important character to hold the position, and not just because of his restoration of the USS Enterprise-D. Picard season 3 reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one final adventure, updating fans on what the characters had been doing for the past 20 years. Some characters like Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) had turned their back on Starfleet, while Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) was a freelance contractor for Starfleet Intelligence. Geordi was one of the few TNG characters that had stayed within Starfleet since the ending of Star Trek: Nemesis, and had worked his way up to the position of Commodore.

There have been several Star Trek Commodores over the years, predominantly in Star Trek: The Original Series. However, Geordi is the first regular Star Trek character to receive the promotion, and it's clear that he's earned the position. Positioned between Captain and Admiral, Commodores generally command a small fleet of starships, oversee a Starbase, or get assigned to a special project, like Geordi was. As curator of the orbital Starfleet museum above Athan Prime, Commodore La Forge is now the most important character to hold the position.

Why Geordi La Forge Is Star Trek’s Most Important Commodore

Commodore Geordi La Forge and the Fleet Museum in Star Trek: Picard

Commodore Geordi La Forge is Star Trek's most important Commodore because he is the keeper of Starfleet's legacy. The Athan Prime Fleet Museum is home to starships from over three centuries of Starfleet history, from the early days of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) to the epoch-shifting events of the Dominion War. In essence, Geordi is the most important Starfleet Commodore because he oversees the most legendary starships of the past 300 years. Although they're installed as museum pieces, Commodore La Forge is responsible for an impressive fleet that includes the USS Defiant, the USS Voyager, the Enterprise NX-01, and the USS Enterprise-A.

At the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Geordi commanded the USS Enterprise-D during its final battle against the Borg. It was thanks to Geordi's command of the Enterprise, and the loyalty of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) to his son Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) that the total annihilation of organic life in the universe was averted. With the Enterprise-D newly installed in the Starfleet Museum, it now takes its place among the other relics. However, Star Trek: Picard season 3 set the precedent that these museum pieces could be deployed in extreme circumstances, and it would be Geordi who would be in command of this legendary fleet.

Geordi’s Starfleet Museum Can Be More Than Star Trek History

It's clear from the work done to the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: Picard that Commodore Geordi La Forge prefers his museum pieces to still be capable of active service. Given the disastrous rollout of Fleet Formation Mode during Starfleet's Frontier Day celebrations, it's easy to see why. If Geordi's exhibits are kept separate from the technological upgrades to the rest of the Starfleet Armada, then they could be an invaluable resource should the fleet be compromised again in the future.

The ships in the museum are not just historic artifacts, they're an in-reserve fleet of the best ships that Starfleet has ever produced. The Borg threat may have been extinguished once and for all, but there are always new dangers lurking out in the darkness of space. It's therefore comforting to know that Star Trek: Picard's Starfleet Museum, and its legendary Commodore, Geordi La Forge have a fleet of starships ready to face what new threats face the Federation in the 25th century.
