Warning! Spoilers ahead of Loki season 2, episode 2.

Summary

  • Marvel Studios finally explains Loki's decision to invade Earth in The Avengers, revealing it was driven by his emotions rather than a clear end goal.
  • Loki's story demonstrates how emotions can cloud judgment and lead to irrational decisions, as seen in both his own actions and Mobius' outburst.
  • Establishing this explanation for Loki's invasion clears up a major inconsistency in his character and provides a deeper understanding of his motivations.

Marvel Studios finally offers an explanation about one of its biggest Loki insults in The Avengers. Tom Hiddleston is officially back as the God of Mischief in his own quest to make sense of the burgeoning Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse. After the game-changing finale of Loki season 1, the Asgardian Prince is delving deep into the anomalies in the TVA in an effort to make sense of He Who Remains' ominous words. As Marvel Studios moves the beloved character's story forward, however, it's also using the opportunity to fill in the narrative gaps in his story.

After 12 years in the MCU, Loki remains as interesting as ever. Granted that this version of the character in the Loki series is different from the Sacred Timeline iteration, their shared history allows the franchise to explain certain questions about the anti-hero. One of the biggest mysteries is his decision to invade Earth in The Avengers. As beloved as the 2012 film was, Loki's motivation to go after the planet never really made sense. 11 years since the Asgardian Prince's nefarious, Marvel Studios has finally cleared up the mystery.

Loki Ending Season 2 episode 2 Image

In Loki season 2, episode 2, "Breaking Brad," Loki sits down with Mobius after a failed attempt to extract information about Sylvie's whereabouts. Mobius is pissed at losing it on Hunter X-5, and the God of Mischief tries to calm him down by validating his display of emotions. In an effort to drive his point better, Loki recalls that time when he was "so angry with my father and my brother, I went down to Earth, and I held the whole of New York City hostage with an alien army." This perfectly explains his motivations for his rather idiotic scheme.

Loki sharing this story reinforces the idea that sometimes, emotions can cloud one's judgment, especially in the heat of the moment. Just like how Mobius lost it on Hunter X-5, Loki wasn't thinking straight when he made a deal with Thanos to lead the Chitauri army against the Avengers. He didn't really consider the specifics of the plan, nor the potential repercussions of it had it failed. Loki wasn't thinking about anything else beyond the attack. As he said, his move wasn't tactical, it was purely driven by emotions.

Loki's Explanation Finally Answers His Biggest MCU Inconsistency

loki in the avengers

For the longest time, it's uncertain what the point was of Loki's attempt to wreak havoc in New York in The Avengers. There have been several theories about it, including being mind-controlled by the Mind Stone that was lent by Thanos. This sounded interesting enough, especially at the height of the mystery surrounding the Infinity Stones. Still, this didn't explain why he would even be open to teaming up with the Titan. Naturally, Loki is a master strategist, so it didn't make sense that he would take on a gargantuan task without a clear end goal. Establishing that his plan was motivated by his emotions is the best way to explain this character inconsistency.
