Warning: This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2, episode 2, "Breaking Brad."

Summary

  • Loki finally reveals that he knew he had the Mind Stone in The Avengers, clearing up a long-standing MCU mystery.
  • Loki admits that he failed to use the Infinity Stones properly, acting on impulse and throwing Tony Stark out the window instead of utilizing the Mind Stone effectively.
  • Loki's emotional and rage-filled attack on New York City was not tactically planned, proving that his misuse of the Infinity Stones likely helped the original Avengers defeat him.

Marvel Studios' Loki season 2 finally answered an 11-year-old MCU mystery surrounding the Infinity Stones and Loki's role in The Avengers' Battle of New York. After debuting in 2011's Thor, Tom Hiddleston returned in The Avengers as the titular team's first villain, waging war on New York City with an army of alien Chitauri and Leviathan in an effort to get revenge on his brother Thor and father Odin. The current version of Loki in the MCU timeline escaped from the Avengers' clutches only moments after this battle, thanks to the Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame, so these events are fresh in his mind during his adventure with the Time Variance Authority.

A lot has happened to Loki since the Battle of New York, as Loki season 1 saw him exploring the TVA, coming face-to-face with his variants, and learning the truth about the multiverse from He Who Remains. Loki season 2 is continuing the God of Mischief's transformation into a hero in the MCU, despite his torturing of Hunter X-5, a.k.a. Brad Wolfe, but Loki season 2, episode 2, "Breaking Brad," saw him reflecting on his time as one of the MCU's original villains. Since the events of The Avengers and Endgame, only weeks have passed for Loki, but this has clearly been enough time for him to ponder his mistakes.

Loki Knew He Had The Mind Stone In The Avengers

Loki with the Mind Stone in The Avengers

Trying to relate to Owen Wilson's Mobius after his outburst during an interrogation of Hunter X-5, Loki recounted his actions during the Battle of New York, and finally explained a mystery that had been unanswered in the MCU since 2012. Loki mentions that he held New York City hostage with an alien army because he was "so angry with [his] father and [his] brother" after the events of Thor, but then notes that he "tried to use the Mind Stone on Tony Stark." Until now, it hadn't been clear whether Loki knew his scepter in The Avengers contained the Mind Stone, but Loki season 2 finally clears up this confusion.

Loki Admits He Failed To Use The Infinity Stones Properly

Loki trying to mind control Tony Stark in The Avengers

Even though Loki knew that he was using the Mind Stone in The Avengers, he freely admits that he didn't use the Infinity Stone to its full potential. In fact, he confirms that once he knew the Mind Stone wasn't going to work on Tony Stark - due to the arc reactor in his chest - Loki acted on impulse, lost his tactical mind, and threw Stark out the window of Stark Tower instead. Loki had already used the Mind Stone to take control of several SHIELD operatives, including Erik Selvig and Clint Barton, yet his failure to control the mind of Tony Stark led to his immediate emotional response.

Loki made no mention of his use of the Tesseract during this interaction with Mobius, but it's likely that Loki also didn't fully understand how to use the Space Stone to its full potential. Ultimately, this proves that Loki's entire attack on New York City in The Avengers was borne of emotion and rage, rather than having been planned out tactically and methodically. Loki's misuse of the Infinity Stones in The Avengers likely helped the MCU's original Avengers team in bringing the villain down, as it's very unlikely the budding superhero team would have been able to defeat Loki had he had full control over two Infinity Stones.
