Summary

  • Loki season 2 is seen as a conclusion to the story they've been focusing on since season 1, but there is potential for a season 3 and many more to explore this character.
  • Loki season 3 could delve into the next steps of The Multiverse Saga and prepare the MCU for its upcoming war with Kang, potentially tying in with future Avengers movies.
  • The creative team for Loki season 3 may experience some changes due to the recent MCU TV overhaul, aiming for a new standard in their Disney+ shows.

It appears there's a chance that Loki season 3 could happen as one of the leading producers teases the possible Marvel Cinematic Universe future that exists for Tom Hiddleston after season 2. After a significant hiatus, Loki season 2 has finally kicked off, continuing the multiverse exploration of the God of Mischief. As the MCU is moving forward with The Multiverse Saga, Loki season 2 is right now one of the most important chapters in the arc, not the least because of the return of Kang this season.

While Loki season 2, episode 1 was released on Disney+ last week, executive producer Kevin Wright may have foreshadowed a season 3 possibility. In an interview with Collider, Wright spoke about crafting Loki season 2, seeing it "closing that book" of the story they have been focusing on since season 1. However, Wright stressed "there are many books on the shelf for this character," as he teased the following about what the chances are for Loki season 3 to happen:

It was similar to Season 1 in we wanted to tell this story and tell it well, but even in Season 1, we obviously were thinking about where we were going. I would say Season 1 and Season 2 were developed and created as, like, kind of two chapters of the same book. We felt pretty strongly, all of us involved, that Season 2 was about closing that book but that there are many other books on the shelf for this character and for this world. But this felt like it wanted to be the conclusion of these great things that we set up in Season 1. We don't want to constantly leave people with drastic cliffhangers for our finales.

What Loki Season 3 Could Be About

Loki MCU Memes

Given how many upcoming MCU movies and TV shows in Phases 5 and 6 have been pushed back in light of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes (with the latter still ongoing), Loki season 3 could still be included in The Multiverse Saga. Since Loki season 3 would likely be written and filmed before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars come out, the MCU show could continue fleshing out the overall storyline for the franchise and focus on something not specifically related to Kang.

It's more than likely the larger MCU will start becoming more aware of Kang sooner rather than later, and if Loki season 3 wanted to, they could use the next season to start getting into the final steps of The Multiverse Saga. In theory, Loki could be exploring other alternative universes that are also actively trying to stop Kang, which could tie in more to the next Avengers movies as they get to the finale of The Multiverse Saga. This way, Loki season 3 is used as a way to prepare the MCU for its massive war with Kang, which is bound to affect multiple realities.

The bigger mystery is how Loki season 3 will be affected by the recent MCU TV overhaul in light of Daredevil: Born Again and future shows aiming to have more traditional writers' rooms and showrunners. If Loki is another MCU show that Marvel Studios is hoping to run for multiple seasons, it wouldn't be shocking if the next season has a little shake-up in its creative team in order to meet the new standard that Marvel Studios is trying to set for their Disney+ shows. But for now, new episodes of Loki season 2 drop every Thursday, exclusively on Disney+
