In the movie, Mike is raising Abby on his own and takes a night security job at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear Pizza. As he discovers more about the place and the animatronics within it, Mike realizes he may have made a mistake when he took this job.
While at New York Comic Con, Screen Rant caught up with Tammi to talk about Five Nights At Freddy's newest protagonist, Abby Schmidt. Tammi teased a connection between the younger sister of security guard Mike and the animatronics, including how she sees them from the perspective of a child. Emma Tammi: Well, I think one of the things that we wanted to do with the movie is bring a) the character of Abby into the forefront and really being able to see the pizzeria and the world of Freddy's through her eyes. Which is completely filled with childhood wonderment before things get really scary for her.
But on top of that, what Mike is grappling with, our lead protagonist, he's dealing with past trauma and the abduction of his brother that happened years ago. So there was an opportunity to bring the ghost kids from the lore into the fold in his dreamscape, that, I think was a really cool additional element breathing new life into the film adaptation.
Connecting The Protagonists & Animatronics Makes Five Nights At Freddy's Stronger
The murderous animatronics are the most iconic part of the game. With the goal of staying alive as they hunt you down in the abandoned pizzeria, it is hard to see them as anything other than monsters. It seems Five Nights At Freddy's movie will take a different approach, not only portraying them as benevolent initially but also exploring the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza through the eyes of a child.
This can open up a new perspective on the animatronics and make their eventual turn all the more terrifying. It seems that Tammi also wanted to create a connection between these creatures and the protagonist, who didn't exist in the game. Players know the tragic origins of what brings Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy to life. By incorporating a deeper trauma in Mike's past that connects him to these four, the audience can gain a deeper understanding of everyone's motivations.
