Summary

  • The Netflix lineup constantly changes, with shows and movies leaving the service each month to make room for new content. This allows for a fresh rotation of offerings.
  • Some notable titles leaving Netflix in October 2023 include the thriller film "The Rental," the rom-com "Jexi," and the action franchise "The Expendables." Fans of these movies should catch them before they're gone.
  • Additionally, sitcoms like "One on One" and "Half & Half" as well as iconic films like "Coming to America" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" are among the titles departing at the end of October, providing a limited time for viewers to enjoy them.

The ever-popular streaming service Netflix features a bevy of new content that comes and goes each month, but which shows and movies are leaving in October 2023? Since its inception, Netflix has positioned itself as the preeminent streaming service, and they were one of the first to delve into the world of original content, which has produced hit shows like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black. However, the streamer also has a great reputation for hosting other content, and they are a one-stop-shop for everything from classic series to some of Hollywood's biggest films.

The streamer has to change its lineup from month to month, and that means that shows and movies are leaving the service all the time. While Netflix's comings and goings aren't all that unusual, the dropping of certain original content in recent months has represented a major change for the company. Though many of Netflix's longest-running originals seem to be there to stay, other shows and movies are departing the streamer for new homes or are simply being dropped altogether from the service. While some things might be gone for good, the departures open the door for brand-new content in the coming months.

October 1

Three characters looking over a railing in The Rental
  • The Rental (2020)

The first title to leave Netflix in October is the underseen thriller The Rental. Serving as the directorial debut of Dave Franco, it follows two couples who rent a vacation home for a celebratory weekend away only for things to quickly turn more sinister as old secrets arise and threats emerge. The movie is elevated by its strong ensemble that includes Alison Brie, Dan Stevens, and Jeremy Allen White, one of the breakout stars of The Bear cast. Though the movie failed to gain much of an audience upon its release, audiences can find it now before it leaves on October 1.

October 2

Adam DeVine lying on his bed with his phone in Jexi
  • Jexi (2019)

Those looking for a fun rom-com with a sci-fi twist should check out Jexi before it leaves Netflix on October 2. Adam Devine stars as a young man who has no social life until he upgrades his new phone which comes with the AI system "Jexi" (voiced by Rose Byrne). Jexi soon becomes his life coach, helping him gain a life, but soon proves to be more controlling than anticipated. The obsession with phones and the worries of AI are elements very much in today's society and Jexi could hold more resonance now than when it was released.

October 4

The cast lined up in front of a grey background in The Expendables 2
  • The Expendables (2010)
  • The Expendables 2 (2012)
  • The Expendables 3 (2014)

With The Expendables 4 being a box office bomb, it is curious timing that the rest of the franchise is being taken off of Netflix on October 4. Designed to be a throwback adventure to the days of 80s and 90s action movies, The Expendables stars a host of big-name stars of the genre in the franchise following mercenaries taking on dangerous missions around the world. The likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Wesley Snipes show up to remind fans they were once kings of the action movie world while the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mel Gibson make for solid villains.

While the movies were never critical successes, there will be plenty of fans who will miss them once they leave Netflix. For those looking to watch the franchise before it leaves this month, the second movie is the highlight of the franchise with Van Damme's fun turn, a silly cameo from Chuck Norris, and the first time Stallone, Willis, and Schwarzenegger have fought side-by-side in an action sequence which is a thrill to see.

October 5

Stephanie, Annie, Kayla, and Michelle partying on a boat in American Pie Girls Rules
  • American Pie: Girls' Rules (2020)

With the original teen comedy coming out in 1999, it is quite impressive that the American Pie franchise is still going strong. The ninth entry into the series, American Pie: Girls' Rules will be leaving Netflix on October 5. In a series that largely focused on the depraved gross-out hijinks of male characters, this latest installment allows the girls to take the spotlight as a group of female friends attempt to get what they want in their last year in high school. Anyone looking to watch this one before it's gone should not expect highbrow entertainment, but fans of the franchise may be curious enough and there is the added bonus of a Danny Trejo cameo.

October 14

  • Half & Half - Seasons 1-4
  • One on One - Seasons 1-5

A pair of sitcoms from the 2000s are leaving Netflix on October 14. One on One ran for five seasons starting in 2001 which stars Kyla Pratt as a young teen who moves in with her father and turns his life upside down. Half & Half is a four-season show which follows Mona and Dee Dee, two half-sisters who didn't know each other much growing up, but when they find themselves living in the same apartment as adults, decide to bond. Though these were not the biggest sitcoms of the 2000s, there are likely a lot of people who have nostalgic fondness for these shows and will be sad to see them leaving Netflix.

  • Victorious - Seasons 1-2

As is usually the case, most of the departing titles on Netflix will be leaving on the last day of the month. This means that October 31 will see a number of great movies and shows being removed that Netflix subscribers only have a brief amount of time to watch before they are gone. Among them are two terrific crime movies from a couple of auteur directors. The first is Michael Mann's Collateral featuring a rare villain turn from Tom Cruise. Cruise plays an efficient hitman who forces a cabbie (Jamie Foxx) to drive him around Los Angeles as he carries out his assassination. Also leaving is Reservoir Dogs, the heist movie that launched Quentin Tarantino as a new unique voice in American cinema.

Netflix will also be losing a pair of classic 1980s comedies. Eddie Murphy played multiple roles in Coming to America, cementing himself as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood in the hilarious story of an African prince who travels to Queens, New York in search of true love. Ferris Bueller's Day Off created an iconic teen movie hero with Matthew Broderick as the titular high schooler planning an epic day outside of class. Some other notable Netflix departures include Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger, Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, and the tearjerker drama Steel Magnolias.
