The Marvel's Spider-Man 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con ended with the reveal of a new, custom PlayStation 5 console design inspired by the main themes of the game; however, this brief video may have spoiled a major plot point. Insomniac's superhero sequel will focus on Peter and Miles' Spider-Men as they take on the threat of the Venom symbiote while fending off Kraven's "Great Hunt" in their city.

In the footage at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, it was revealed that Peter would bond with the symbiote at some point in the game. This mirrors the more traditional plot point in the Venom saga where Peter gradually becomes corrupted by the symbiote before something happens - usually something detrimental to his personal relationships - that pushes him to remove it. However, this custom PS5 reveal may have teased that the method in which he removes it might be quite different in the upcoming title.

Miles' Bioelectricity Could Be The Key To Removing The Symbiote

The Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 reveal video (which can be watched on PlayStation's YouTube channel) showed the console's plating and DualSense controller featuring the white spider symbol on a red backdrop with a design similar to the custom PS4 Pro that accompanied Marvel's Spider-Man's release in 2018 before getting gradually consumed by the black symbiotic tendrils. The video then goes on to show Miles' bioelectricity blasting away part of the symbiote, resulting in a sleek black and red final design with the console entirely black on one side to represent the Venom symbiote, while revealing some red under the tendrils on the other.

While this alone would have been enough to hint that Miles' powers could be what saves Peter, the video takes this further by using what appears to be audio of Peter and Miles in the game as Peter asks Miles for help with the symbiote, and Miles uses his blasts to free him of the suit.

A Showdown Between Peter & Miles Seems Inevitable

Miles can be heard exclaiming, "What is this stuff?!" early into the video, and Peter seems willing for Miles to help him remove it, which suggests that either Peter has kept Miles in the dark about the symbiote's true nature outside of just being a new suit and now needs his help to remove it after he's gone too far, or that this is their first encounter with the symbiote. The gameplay footage and the new SDCC story trailer have both hinted that Miles may be the key to stopping a symbiote-influenced Peter, and this PS5 reveal - along with the similar graphics over the "Be Greater Together" tagline cards - cement the idea that Miles will have a showdown with his mentor to free him of its control.

It's inevitable that Peter will get rid of the symbiote at some point in the story, as Venom's appearance has already been revealed, showing the symbiote bonding with someone else. It would certainly be an interesting move for the PlayStation marketing team to use audio containing exactly how he is freed from the suit as this will likely be a major turning point for the characters at least halfway to two-thirds of the way through the story. It's possible that this could be misdirection, and rather than pulling the entire audio from such a major scene in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it's a compilation from different moments in the game that have been used to fit the PS5 reveal video's narrative or entirely new dialogue recorded by Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter specifically for the promo.
