Summary

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature the vigilante alter-ego Wraith, the former police captain Yuri Watanabe, who seeks revenge after a tragic event.
  • Wraith is on Kraven the Hunter's hit list and may become a target in the game, potentially leading to an alliance between the Spider-Men and Wraith.
  • Fans can expect an intense reunion between Wraith and the Spider-Men as they clash over their differing ideologies about dealing with criminals in the upcoming game.

So far, Marvel's Spider-Man 2's trailers have focused primarily on Venom and Kraven the Hunter, who will be the primary antagonists for the upcoming title. However, the new story trailer from San Diego Comic-Con may have given fans a better look at yet another villain that Peter and Miles will be facing in the game.

Considering how the first Marvel's Spider-Man game had Peter Parker fighting the Sinister Six, Shocker, Tombstone, and Kingpin, it's likely that its sequel will follow suit and have a wealth of foes for the web-slinging duo to combat. So far, the 11-minute gameplay reveal introduced Insomniac's take on the Lizard - who Miles and Peter had to pursue and protect from Kraven along the East River - and the story trailer teased the return of Mr. Negative, who Miles will confront over the death of his father in the first game.

Yuri Watanabe Has Become Wraith In Spider-Man 2

Wraith emerges from a burning building in Spider-Man 2's SDCC trailer

Former police captain Yuri Watanabe's vigilante alter-ego, Wraith, will appear in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Yuri was a great ally to Peter in the first Marvel's Spider-Man game, forming his main connection to the New York Police Department and providing him with leads while putting up with his sense of humor and Spider-Cop jokes.

Sadly, this changed during the events of the City That Never Sleeps DLC when Yuri's squad was ambushed and massacred by Hammerhead, and an off-the-books undercover sting failed, leading her down a much darker path as she sought revenge, and murdered several members of the mob in her pursuit. In the final chapter of the DLC, Silver Lining, Peter followed a series of recordings that led him to a dead Maggia enforcer surrounded by yellow police tape, confirming her transformation into Wraith.

It had long been rumored that the first part of the game will feature Peter and Miles tracking down a vigilante serial killer who would likely be Wraith in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, picking up this loose end. New footage from the San Diego Comic-Con story trailer shows that these rumors were likely correct, as Wraith can be seen emerging in full costume from a burning building.

Wraith Is On Kraven's Great Hunt List

While the new story trailer reveals Wraith's full costume (albeit mostly silhouetted), this isn't the first time she has appeared in Marvel's Spider-Man 2's promotional material. In the Introducing Kraven teaser that accompanied the 2023 PlayStation Showcase's gameplay footage, Wraith appeared prominently on Kraven's tablet of potential prey. Kraven's bringing his Great Hunt to New York, having grown tired of merely skilled humans and seeking out a greater challenge with superpowered foes.

So far, it's unknown whether Insomniac's take on Wraith will have superpowers like some others on this list, or will fall under the "greatly skilled" or "technologically enhanced" category like Prowler or Black Cat. If Kraven does opt to hunt Wraith, it could lead to an uneasy alliance between the Spider-Men and the violent vigilante as they work against the hunter for the greater good.

With Marvel's Spider-Man 2's October 20 release date drawing nearer, fans will hopefully get a better look at Wraith and her role in the game soon. The ending of the Silver Lining DLC chapter set up an intense reunion between the former allies when they next meet due to their differing ideologies of what to do with criminals, so it will be interesting to see how this is resolved in the upcoming game.
