Summary

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature both Peter and Miles teaming up to take on the villain Venom, with a different identity than in the comics.
  • The symbiote will significantly alter Peter's personality, corrupting him and presenting a potential catalyst for him to remove it.
  • The game will expand its map to include locations like Brooklyn and Queens, allowing players to explore iconic Marvel locations and the heroes' schools.

Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con gave players the best look at the game's story to date, with a whole new trailer, and comments from the cast and creative team behind the game. Previous reveals confirmed that the superhero sequel will see both Peter and Miles' Spider-Men teaming up to take on the fan-favorite villain, Venom, whose identity will be different from the comics and most other forms of media.

Previous gameplay footage also revealed that Venom wouldn't be the only threat the heroes will face, as Kraven the Hunter has brought his quest for a "worthy hunt" to New York, and will be targeting the city's superpowered citizens. He may, however, come up against more than he has bargained for, as Peter Parker will don the Venom symbiote first - which is accurate to most depictions - and it will alter his personality significantly while granting players access to an entire skill tree of special, more brutal symbiote abilities.

10 Yuri Lowenthal Can "Say Anything" And Blame It On The Symbiote

Symbiote Peter Parker in the Spider-Man 2 SDCC trailer

How the symbiote changes Peter Parker was a huge talking point at the panel, with Peter's voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal joking that he can "say anything [he wants] and blame it on the symbiote" and that the suit gives him more power but with little responsibility. While the previous gameplay footage showed Peter beginning to behave a bit more aggressively, the new SDCC story trailer showed how far this will corrupt him, as Mary Jane can be seen hiding from him at one point, and pleads with Miles to help him as he is "not himself", leaning heavily into the horror vibes that Insomniac previously promised. In most stories about Peter's time with the symbiote, there is usually a major catalyst - usually him harming or scaring someone he loves - that forces him to make the decision to remove it, so this sequence with Mary Jane could lead to such a moment.

9 Mary Jane's Job At The Daily Bugle Could Be In Jeopardy

MJ talks to Peter in the Spider-Man 2 SDCC trailer

Mary Jane will have a more hands-on role in the game, as her relationship with Peter (pre-symbiote) is stronger than ever and the two treat each other as partners and assist with their investigations. This was set up in the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic as MJ worked closely with Peter and Miles to track down The Hood, and in the game's new story trailer, Peter can be seen asking her to investigate Kraven. Her journalistic career at the Daily Bugle may be in jeopardy, however, as it was confirmed that J Jonah Jameson would be returning to the newspaper as her boss after the two publicly clashed over Jameson's criticism of her book "Perilous: A Journey Into War-Torn Symkaria" during an interview on his "Just the Facts" podcast.

8 Peter Parker Has A New Job (But Still Has Time To "Tutor" Miles)

Harry shakes hands with Miles at a funfair as Peter introduces them in the Spider-Man 2 SDCC trailer

Peter Parker, however, may finally have some job security again. Peter's financial state was so bad that he became homeless during the first Marvel's Spider-Man game after Octavius Industries lost its funding. After this, players did have the option to carry out tasks left behind by Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn, at various Oscorp research stations across the city, and from one scene during the trailer in which Miles asks how Peter's "new job" will impact his time "tutoring" Miles (as Spider-Man), it looks like this may have led to some work with Harry and the company on developing a way to cure diseases.

In the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic, Peter was working toward acquiring a teacher's certificate but was also struggling to pay the mortgage on his Aunt May's house in Queens, which he inherited following her tragic passing at the end of the first game. Later in the trailer, Peter can be seen donning a tuxedo as a waiter, but it's likely that this is part of an investigation as he seems nervous and focused, rather than his new job.

7 Spider-Man 2's Larger Map Will Include More Iconic Marvel Locations

Harry talks to Peter at Midtown High School's football field in the opening to Spider-Man 2's SDCC trailer

The previous gameplay footage showed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2's map will be larger than its predecessors, expanding to Brooklyn and Queens (the childhood homes of Miles and Peter, respectively). This means that players will be able to visit locations that mean a lot to the two superheroes, such as the aforementioned Parker residence in Queens, and potentially the heroes' schools. Peter and Harry can be seen sitting at the Midtown High School football field in the story trailer's opening, and players may be able to visit Brooklyn Visions Academy, which could play a part in the story as Miles Morales is applying for college - and putting off writing his application essay by carrying out Spider-Man duties instead - during the events of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

6 Spider-Man 2 Takes Place Around 9 Months After Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Peter and Miles swing through the city in the Spider-Man 2 SDCC trailer

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will take place around nine to ten months after the events of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, with both heroes far more experienced than before. With this experience, Miles Morales' actor, Nadji Jeter explained that the younger Spider-Man would be coming into his own a bit more, but still looks up to his mentor Peter even after this time has passed, which could make it all the more of a gut-punch when the two heroes inevitably go toe-to-toe to free Peter of the symbiote's hold.

5 Miles Will Confront Martin Li About The Death Of His Father

Martin Li returns in Spider-Man 2's SDCC trailer

Part of Miles' growth will come from revisiting one of the more shocking moments from Marvel's Spider-Man, Martin Li and the Inner Demons' horrific terrorist attack which led to the death of Miles' father, Jefferson Davis. Martin Li was apprehended by the end of Marvel's Spider-Man and resides in the R.A.F.T. super-prison with the rest of the Sinister Six. However, he appeared in the trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sporting long hair, a beard, and a prisoner uniform, indicating that Miles will come face to face with his father's killer during some kind of attack on the R.A.F.T. prison (potentially led by Kraven). Jeter went on to explain how Li's return created a "lot of emotions" on set and how Jefferson's death looms over the Morales family, so this reunion sounds like it could be extremely intense.

4 Miles May Be The Key To Removing The Symbiote

Peter and Miles talk unmasked in the Spider-Man 2 SDCC trailer

It had already been announced that Miles and Peter will be the co-leads of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, with both heroes getting an equal amount of missions and players being able to swap between them during the open-world segments whenever they choose. However, some new audio and a graphic over part of a PS5 reveal trailer have revealed that Miles' role may be the key to stopping the symbiote threat. In the audio, Peter and Miles can be heard talking about removing the symbiote, and Miles' bio-electricity can be seen blasting the tendrils and pushing them back. This matches the previous trailers' title reveal with a similar kind of imagery, and while in other media, Symbiotes are mainly vulnerable to fire and intense sonic frequencies, this indicates that Miles may have an advantage over them thanks to his unique skillset.

3 A Custom Spider-Man 2 PS5 Will Release September 1

The Spider-Man 2 limited edition PS5 bundle

The aforementioned PS5 reveal trailer showed the new custom design based on Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The console's plating and DualSense controller feature the white spider symbol on a red backdrop - much like the custom PS4 Pro that accompanied the first game's release - being taken over by the black symbiotic tendrils. This custom PS5 will release September 1st - 19 days prior to the game's launch - as part of a limited edition bundle that includes the console, a digital code for the standard edition of the game, and the controller. For those who already own a PS5, however, the plates and controller will be sold separately to allow them to customize their device.

2 Harry Osborn Will Be Venom In Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Harry and Norman talk in front of the Venom symbiote in Spider-Man 2's SDCC trailer

Previously, Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Creative Director, Bryan Intihar confirmed that Eddie Brock would not be Venom in the game, which is a departure from most traditional media surrounding the character, leading to some speculation surrounding who the symbiote's host will be. The new story trailer made it pretty clear, however, that Harry Osborn will be Venom in the title, as dialog about "healing the world" is echoed by Harry and Venom throughout. Previously, Harry was Venom's host in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV show, but this game appears to be tying the symbiote directly to Harry's ill health, making the two share more of an essential bond.

Harry was always going to have a close tie to the symbiote, as the previous games' post-credit scenes revealed that it played a part in the experimental treatment for his terminal illness. With Harry appearing and seemingly cured of this in the story trailer - although Peter's comments in the previously-shown gameplay may indicate this is short-lived - it seems like Harry wants to use the symbiote as a way to further cure other diseases, harking back to the suit's origins in the Ultimate Spider-Man continuity, although a moment in the trailer showed the symbiote being discovered in a crater, indicating that its origins may still be extra-terrestrial. These plans will likely take a dark turn given the symbiote's corruptive influence on Peter and the destruction being caused by Venom toward the end of the trailer.

1 Tony Todd Called Marvel's Spider-Man 2 "A Masterpiece"

Venom roars on a busy NYC street in Spider-Man 2's SDCC trailer

Horror icon, Tony Todd will be voicing Venom, and has already expressed his joy over the role in other interviews. At the SDCC panel, Todd called Marvel's Spider-Man 2 "a masterpiece" and provided some details surrounding his portrayal of the iconic Spider-Man foe. According to Todd, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 "wanted to make him human first", stating that "he had to be relatable and have an objective", which mirrors Harry's comments in the trailer about using the suit to heal the world, and the symbiote initially trying to make Peter a more powerful - if ruthless - crime fighter.

Todd went on to say that he wanted there to be a "joyous quality" to his portrayal of Venom and that he had "fun" with the character. This seems like a slight contrast to the darker, more serious take on the Venom saga that Insomniac's creative team alluded to in past interviews, where they stated that Peter's arc with the symbiote would be an allegory for addiction, but could make for great gameplay should Marvel's Spider-Man 2 make him the much-rumored third playable character.
