Summary

  • A Reservation Dogs movie is a strong possibility, according to co-creator Sterlin Harjo, who has plans for a feature-length adventure with the Rez Dogs.
  • While the movie hasn't been officially confirmed yet and there's no set release date, Harjo is already plotting and is open to continuing the story in a different way.
  • The movie's plot is unknown, but it is expected to be a new story that moves beyond the themes of grief and coming of age explored in the series. The cast for the movie is also unconfirmed but may include the original core cast and potentially high-profile names.

After the three season show was a breakout hit for Hulu the tease that a Reservation Dogs movie could be on the cards has gained no shortage of attention. Running from 2021 to 2023, Reservation Dogs tell the story of the Rez Dogs, four Indiginous teenages in Oklahoma. After the death of Daniel, the fifth member of their group, the Rez Dogs resolved to commit however much crime they need to in order to fulfill a dream of heading to California.

The Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi created show has received an incredible amount of praise, with Reservation Dogs drawing acclaim for everything from its authentic portrayal of Indiginous American culture through to the performances of cast members Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis. While the show wrapped where Harjo and Waititi wanted there’s still scope (and audience demand) for more stories with the Rez Dogz, making The Reservation Dogs movie a definite possibility for Hulu.

The first news on a possible Reservation Dogs movie arrived on September 27, 2023. Reservation Dogs co-creator Sterlin Harjo spoke to Variety about the future of the show after its season 3 conclusion on Hulu. Harjo was candid about there being no season 4 but did reveal he had plans for a future Reservation Dogs movie, bringing the Rez Dogs back for a feature length adventure.

“As soon as we announced the ending, I was like, ‘I think I know of a great feature film that I could do, a Rez Dogs return.’” Harjo explained, “so, I’m already plotting. It’s just that this story needed to end. This story was about loss and grief and coming of age. And this was the arc that we wanted to tell. It doesn’t mean we can’t pick it back up.”

As for when the Reservation Dogs movie could arrive, and whether it had properly entered development yet, Harjo’s update was a little less promising, however. “But there is not a continuation right now. It could easily come back, but it’ll be something else.” he explained, “And it will be later.” It seems that while Sterlin Harjo has every intention of bringing the Rez Dogs back in a movie, the hypothetical release date is still some way away.

The Reservation Dogs Movie Isn’t Confirmed

Reservation Dogs season 3 finale

The Reservation Dogs movie isn’t confirmed yet. So far the closest there has been to a confirmation came from Sterlin Harjo, who co-created Reservation Dogs with Taika Waititi. While Harjo revealed he has plans for a Rez Dogs movie nothing official has taken place yet when it comes to development.

Reservation Dogs Movie Release Date Prediction

The cast of Reservation Dogs

The release date for the Reservation Dogs movie is unknown, and it’s difficult to predict unless the movie enters active development. Co-creator Sterln Harjo has a few ideas, but from his comments it seems there’s no script or set-in-stone story yet. This means it could be a few years before the movie arrives even if it’s confirmed soon. A Reservation Dogs release date of 2026 or later isn’t unrealistic, but it may arrive even later.

Reservation Dogs Movie Cast

The cast of the Reservation Dogs movie hasn’t been announced (or even confirmed behind the scenes from the sounds of things), but it would likely include some or all of the shows core cast returning to continue their characters stories after the Reservation Dogs season 3 finale. This means that any of the following Rez Dogs cast members could make an appearance in the movie:

  • Devery Jacobs (Rhymes for Young Ghouls) as Elora Danan Postoak
  • D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Murdoch Mysteries) as Bear Smallhill
  • Lane Factor (The Fabelmans) as Chester Cheese Williams
  • Paulina Alexis (Bones of Crows) as Wilhelmina Jaqueline “Willie Jack” Smith

Any of the recurring and supporting cast members in Reservation Dogs, such as Sarah Podemski (Mekko) as Bear’s mom Rita or Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds) as Officer Big could also appear in the movie cast. The show was also noted for its celebrity cameos, with the likes of Bill Burr, Amber Midthunder, and Ethan Hawke all making appearances. It’s highly likely that there’d be some high-profile names attached to teh cast of the Reservation Dogs movie too.

Reservation Dogs Movie Story

It’s impossible to predict what the plot of the Reservation Dogs movie will be. It could be that Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi pick up exactly where the Reservation Dogs season 3 story left off. It’s also possible that they leave it a few years before making the Rez Dogs film, catching up with Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack after some time has passed to see how the events of the show impacted their lives.

The only tease for the Reservation Dogs movie plot so far has come from co-creator Sterlin Harjo, but even this is the confirmation he’s got ideas for where the story could go after the show. Harjo explained that the show ended where he and Waititi wanted, and that it told a story about grief and coming of age. This suggests that the Reservation Dogs movie would also be a new story, one that’s less focused on the Rez Dogs growing up and isn’t hinged on the fallout from Daniel’s death. Exactly what this story will be, however, is a mystery that will remain unsolved until the Reservation Dogs movie is confirmed.
