The Nun 2 Box Office Success Explained

Much like its predecessor, which was made on a mid-sized budget of $22 million and ended its theatrical run with $365 million grossed, The Nun II has been a box office success. This is despite its somewhat lukewarm opening at the domestic box office, where it made a middling $32.6 million. The sequel made up for that by opening to $85.3 million worldwide, which was the second-highest opening ever for a Conjuring Universe movie behind the original Nun.

The sequel's strong showing continued in its second weekend at the box office, as it grossed $55 million worldwide and surpassed the original movie's $53.8 million opening weekend. The sequel also put up a serious fight against A Haunting Venice as both horror movies fought for first place at the box office for that weekend. In its third weekend, The Nun II took the number one spot at the domestic box office once again, narrowly defeating another new release, The Expendables 4.

The Nun II was released on digital platforms on October 3, less than a month after its theatrical debut. Therefore, it has mostly fizzled out at the box office after a strong showing. However, this hasn't stopped the sequel from quietly crossing the $250 million milestone worldwide, though it still falls far behind the original movie's $365 million.
